HaRP Approach

The Health Research Program (HaRP) seeks to reduce the following maternal and infant health outcomes, including:

  • Mortality related to pregnancy through six months postpartum
  • Fetal loss, pre-term birth and infant mortality through six months of age
  • Maternal morbidity due to infection and obstetric complications
  • Maternal nutritional status and body composition
  • Infant growth and morbidity

Secondary aims of practical importance include:

  • Assessing the prevalence and risk factors of multiple facets of maternal morbidity elucidating causes of pregnancy-related and non-pregnancy mortality among rural women of reproductive age
  • Describing health-seeking behavior of mothers during and following pregnancy
  • Revealing the burden of epidemiology of birth defects in infants
